The Creation of Eve

According to Christian tradition,
God created Eve from Adam's rib:
"Then the Lord God made a woman
from the rib he had taken out of the man,
and he brought her to the man."

(Genesis 2:22).
However, the word used in the Hebrew Bible
is 'side' instead of the more specific 'rib'.
According to Jewish rabbis,
God chose not to create Eve from his head
to prevent her from becoming arrogant
and from rivalling her husband.
He did not create her from Adam's feet
either,so that she would not feel oppressed
to the point of wishing to leave him.

Instead, God created the first woman
from the first man's side,
so that the two would be equals.
Genesis 2:24 reads: "That is why
a man leaves his father and mother
and is united to his wife,
and they become one flesh."
Since Michelangelo's whole idea
for the ceiling is based on
Jewish mysticism and hidden symbolics,
in the fresco Eve is not rising out of
Adam's rib,but is instead stepping out
of his entire side.
